A great city has many components.
There are many related facets in Philly, from delicious/diverse culinary options to a thriving sports culture and a keen eye for the arts. Then, there’s the rich history etched into every piece of brick and square inch of concrete throughout the City of Brotherly Love.
Another crucial component of a great city is events that unite residents and attract visitors from out of town. They could be low-key or full-on extravaganzas. Either way, these outings add to the enjoyment of living in the area and fill locals with a collective sense of pride.
Philadelphia hosts many such events, of which we’ll discuss five happening this spring:
If you enjoy scoping out the magnificent gardens at Fairmount Park or heading an hour south to Winterthur to get your green fix, we’ve got good news for you.
The Philadelphia Flower Show is here from March 4th to 12th.
The world’s longest-running and nation’s largest horticultural event, Philly’s PHS Flower Show features the awe-inspiring work of the world’s most accomplished landscape and floral designers.
Attending the show (held at Pennsylvania Convention Center on 1101 Arch Street) means you’ll be immersed in acres of captivating garden displays. Also, you can watch highly regarded competitions in artistic floral arranging and horticulture.
Moreover, those attending The Flower Show will enjoy gardening demonstrations, presentations, and other unique events.
This year’s “The Garden Electric!” theme will harness the spark of joy stemming from receiving or giving flowers.
Have you visited Double Knot, Fat Salmon Sushi, or one of
Philadelphia's many other exceptional Japanese restaurants?
Places like these speak to the budding Japanese community throughout Philly.
More to the point, the Japanese community in Philadelphia is a shining reflection of the prevailing diversity across our melting-pot city.
Another example of the thriving Japanese population in Philadelphia is the yearly
Cherry Blossom Festival.
This year, the annual spring celebration occurs on Saturday, April 15, and Sunday, April 16, from 10:30am to 4pm. It will be hosted at the Horticulture Center and Centennial Arboretum in West Fairmount Park.
Greater Philadelphia’s Japan America Society organized the Subaru Cherry Blossom Festival to celebrate culture and arts. Sponsored by Subaru of America, this festival will feature events across Philly, bringing a taste of Japan to our beloved city.
The Japanese flowering cherry sakura tree brightens Philadelphia’s parks and streets, and the festival highlights the magnificent tree’s astonishing beauty.
Philadelphia has long been a musical hub, famous for genres like Philly soul.
We also host plenty of big-time performances at our iconic music venues. Legends like Patti Labelle and Hall & Oats are also from Philly. As are the likes of Jill Scott, Chubby Checker, and Jim Croce.
It only makes sense that a place like Philly has broad musical tastes, extending to metal music.
With those above sentiments in mind, who doesn’t enjoy listening to their favorite brand of thrash metal while sipping on some pilsner? This potent mixture will be available to you on April 14th and 15 during
the Decibel Magazine Metal & Beer Fest at the Fillmore Philadelphia at 29 E Allen Street.
The event will feature bands like the legendary Suicidal Tendencies and The Black Dahlia Murder. Craft beer icons 3 Floyds and other breweries like WarPigs and Wake Brewing will also be featured.
Eclectic is the most accurate word to describe Philly’s Metal and Beer fest–but Philadelphia is a city for people with a vast spectrum of musical and beer-based tastes.
Philly is iconic for many reasons. It’s a city that instantly jumps to people’s minds when you mention the northeast (or mid-Atlantic) US. One of the reasons for Philadelphia’s legendary status is its prowess in the kitchen that goes far beyond cheesesteaks (although we love us a cheesesteak).
On the above note, the yearly East Passyunk
Flavors On The Avenue springtime celebration will be underway from 11am until 5pm on April 30th. During this delicious extravaganza, the neighborhood’s top restaurants will host an outdoor shindig along a buzzing stretch of East Passyunk Avenue.
Visitors can sample the culinary masterpieces and seasonal cocktails from various award-winning restaurants located in East Passyunk. There are also dozens of vendors, live music, a craft market, and activities for kids.
The address for Flavors On The Avenue is 1904 East Passyunk Avenue.
Sports and Philadelphia go together like peanut butter and jam. Our sporting culture is world-famous and a source of pride for most locals.
Speaking of pride, what Philly resident didn’t feel proud when our beloved Phillies came oh-so-close to winning World Series last year? It was a heroic, underdog effort that should be celebrated for years to come.
One way to honor the incredible effort of last year’s Phillies is by giving them your wholehearted support this year. Moreover, why not start root--root-rooting for the home team during their
home opener at Citizen’s Bank Park on April 6th at 3:05 pm?
We bet you can smell the popcorn and crackerjacks already. Plus, who knows? Maybe you’ll catch a Bryce Harper home run or a Kyle Schwarber foul ball.
Opening day is always a fun-filled occasion and the ideal way to ring in the new MLB season. Also, while we don’t want to jinx anything–we feel pretty good about the Phillies’ chances for a championship ring this year.
There’s never a dull moment in Philadelphia, and we have the local events to prove it. The above spring festivals and celebrations are only a few of many reasons that Philly is one of the best cities in the US.
