Apartment Move-In Checklist

Preparing for moving day can be stressful, that's why we've created a Move-In Checklist to help keep you on track!

✓ Declutter: 

• Don’t waste time packing things you’re going to throw away: Purge things you don't need months before you start to pack up. 
• Consider a garage sale or scheduling a pick up with the Salvation Army or GoodWill to donate your unwanted items.

✓ Craft a plan for moving day:

• Establish a budget for your move. This can determine whether or not you can hire movers.
• Are you hiring movers? 
• If you are leaning toward hiring movers, this should be done at least six weeks before the day you plan to move.
• Moving yourself?
• Gather Boxes and packing tape. (*Tip* Ask liquor stores or grocery stores if you can use their boxes. They are constantly receiving shipments, and believe it or not, boxes aren’t cheap.)
• Ensure you have a plan for children/pets if applicable
• Prepare to take off work if necessary to accommodate your move-in schedule. 

✓ Packing:

• Create a system for organizing your boxes by room.
• Measure the dimensions of your new place so you know if your current furniture will fit.
• Separate out valuables, important documents, and delicate items. 

✓ Pack an Essentials Bag 

• Pack an essential bag as if you were going on an overnight trip. This way you won’t have to dig through boxes for what you need to get ready and begin unpacking. 
• Towel, soap, shampoo, and conditioner. 
• Razor and Shaving Cream
• Toothbrush
• Deodorant
• Change of clothes
• Phone charger
• Extras that can come in handy:
• Batteries
• Flashlight
• Pocket knife
• Measuring tape
• Lightbulbs
• First aid kit

Redirect your mail to your new address

✓ Moving Day:

• Do a walk-through of the place you’re leaving.
• Final deep clean to ensure you get your deposit back.
• Check your lease to confirm there aren’t any additional move-out rules.
• Do a walkthrough of your new place (see our inspection checklist.)
