Inspection Checklist

How to prepare for a routine or move-out inspection from your landlord

What's the purpose of a move-out inspection/walkthrough?

The inspection is for your benefit, as well as the landlord’s. The landlord wants to inspect to see if there's anything that needs to be fixed before you move out. This is so they can fix everything before renting out to the next tenant. If everything checks out, they give back your security deposit. Properly preparing for a move-out inspection from your landlord ensures that you won't be fined for damages you didn’t cause.

During the inspection/walkthrough, you should be
very observant and thorough. If you aren’t you might end up getting charged for damages that existed upon your moving in. Here's some things to look for:

Kitchen

  • Test every appliance to ensure it works correctly.
  • Oven and Stove top
  • Dishwasher
  • Refrigerator
  • Garbage disposal
  • Microwave
  • Check all cabinets and drawers:
  • Do you see any chips or scratches?
  • Do they open correctly?
  • Do any drawers stick?
  • Any loose knobs?

Bathrooms

  • Do the faucets work as they should?
  • How is the water pressure, as strong as it was when you moved in?
  • Hot water working?
  • Shower and sink draining properly?
  • Does the toilet flush?
  • Does the fan turn on?
  • Do all lights turn on?

Entire Apartment

  • Check outlets
  • Check lights, are they all working?
  • Check walls for scuffs, holes, etc.

Security and Safety

  • Do all the door locks in the house work properly?
  • Do any of the doorknobs have issues?
  • Do all the window locks work?
