Guide to Pet Proofing Your Home

September 12, 2022

It's difficult to look at your home and see all the perils that can cause your pet harm or injury. However, many things can harm your pet at home.

Pets can be very curious, and their curiosity can lead to their demise. You have to take charge and ensure your home is a safe environment for your pet, which means pet-proofing.

The following is a guide to pet-proofing your entire home:

Living Room

Your pets will spend a significant amount of time in the living room, so starting the pet-proofing process there is best. Many dangers in your living room can harm your cat or dog. It would be best to begin by decluttering the room and putting away things like kids' toys.

If you enjoy plants in the living room, they might be dangerous to a pet, so put them out of reach. Cover the HVAC vents to prevent your pet from getting into them and sucked into the AC. Anti-scratch tape on the couch is great for avoiding scratches by your pet.

Electrical cords are a menace in many living rooms, and you should go wireless or cover them to prevent pets from chewing through the wires.

Kitchen

Pets love the kitchen because of the food. The aromas in the kitchen and sights of tasty meals mean pets will spend a lot of time there. However, the kitchen has many dangers, like sharp cutlery and hot surfaces.

Use a stove guard to prevent pets from jumping on any hot surface. Get secure lids for trash cans and bins in the kitchen. Childproof latches will prevent pets from getting into any kitchen cabinets. Ensure you keep any cleaning supplies in the kitchen in a locked cabinet. Close the dishwasher whenever you are not using it and cover any small gaps between kitchen appliances to keep small pets out.

Bathroom

The hazards in bathrooms are pretty apparent. One of the most important steps to pet-proofing your bathroom is putting all the cleaning supplies and medications away in a locked cabinet.

Get a toilet lid that can shut and not be opened by the pet. If you have hair accessories, keep them off the floor, as your pet can choke on them. Put bitter spray on bathroom cabinet corners and rugs to keep pets away and prevent chewing.

If your pet is particularly troublesome, you should also take the toilet paper off the roll and store it in a cabinet or put it high enough where pets cannot reach it

Bedroom

You never want to wake up in the middle of the night from deep slumber because your pet is choking in your bedroom. To pet-proof your bedroom, ensure you always keep the closet doors closed, especially if you have a cat or small dog. These pets can get locked in there without you even realizing it, which could lead to unsightly behavior like a potty accident.

If you have electrical devices like charging stations, put them on a high shelf, away from your pets. It is an excellent idea to create a separate bed for your pets instead of sharing your bed with them. If you share your bed with pets, always make it to prevent the pets from digging into your mattress. Move dangerous items like makeup, lipstick, and grooming products on a high shelf and out of reach. Keeping items off your bedroom floor is also wise when living with pets.

Final Thoughts

Your house is a danger zone for pets, and pet-proofing is the best way to ensure safety for both you and your furry friend.
