Spring COVID Restrictions in Philadelphia

Guide to Philly COVID Restrictions this Spring

A year ago, businesses closed their doors, and panic ensued across the Philadelphia area as the pandemic spread across the globe. This March marks a change in the tide. As the weather warms and vaccine availability increases, Philadelphia residents are eager to get out of their houses. The warm weather is tempting, so it's best to stay up to date on just what you can do and how you can do it safely.

While Philadelphia is currently still in a "Safer at Home" phase, some restrictions have loosened. Since most health care workers have been vaccinated, front-line workers and people with pre-existing conditions are now eligible to get the vaccine. Even if you haven't been vaccinated, you can still go out, but be sure to read up on the restrictions in place around the city before you head out the door.

On March 15th, Governor Tom Wolfe announced exciting news regarding new businesses' restrictions that will begin on April 4th. Each type of business and each business owner will have specific guidelines. It's best to plan so you know what to expect before you head out. Keep reading to learn more about the safety guidelines in place to keep you and those you love healthy and safe.

Traveling

Traveling is a go! You are no longer required to quarantine and test before traveling between states. It is suggested to only go out of state when necessary Hand-washing, mask-wearing, and keeping a distance from others is still recommended for both vaccinated and unvaccinated persons.

Dining and Drinks

Bar service will resume, alcohol service without food purchase will now be allowed, and the curfew for removing alcoholic drinks from tables will finally be lifted. There is also good news for restaurants, as Philly's indoor dining capacity will be raised to 75 percent for self-certified restaurants. To be self-certified, a restaurant must be committed to complying with all public health and safety guidelines, including the cleaning standards and other guidelines the Governor and the Secretary of Health put forth. (Those who chose not to self-certify will be allowed to serve at 50 percent capacity.)

Museums

Most museums in the Philadelphia area are open but with fewer hours and more rules. When visiting any museum in Philly, you must wear a mask and remain 6 ft apart from all other visitors. Not to worry, employees abide by the same rules and only take off their masks during their break time. Please note that all guided tours are limited to 15 total staff and visitors, and each enclosed exhibit room is limited to 20 people at a time. Each museum has changed its hours to what they can accommodate while still being safe, so be sure to check the updated hours of the museum you want to visit before heading out.

Social Gatherings

Before getting together with friends and family outside of your household, be sure to ask what they have been doing during the COVID-19 emergency. It is wise to get tested and make a plan before seeing others outside of your household. If not yet vaccinated, it is best to keep your mask on and keep it at a safe distance. For all indoor gatherings, regardless of venue, the maximum occupancy is 25%. For outdoor groups, the maximum occupancy is 50%.

Personal Services

Starting April 4th, all personal care facilities will be allowed to serve 75% of their maximum occupancy. Face coverings and maintaining a distance from other customers are still required in all personal care facilities. This includes (but is not limited to): salons, barbershops, nail salons, body art parlors, gyms, waxing facilities, massage spas, and facial spas.

The only times face coverings are allowed to be taken off are when a professional needs access to the customer's face– such as a facial or micro-needling procedure. The customer should wait until instructed to remove their face covering and put it back on as soon as the procedure is finished.

Entertainment

Entertainment facilities will also have a higher maximum occupancy limit that will be in effect on April 4th. Casinos, theaters, malls, and other retail facilities will be allowed to serve 75% of their maximum occupancy. Curb-side pickup is still available at many businesses, and masks are still required when indoors.

While these new restrictions are good news, we must also still maintain caution if we want these numbers to stay down. The city still suggests face coverings, washing your hands, and keeping your distance from others to keep everyone as safe and healthy as possible this spring.
