Top School Districts Around Philadelphia

Andrew Faulkner • June 6, 2022

While Philadelphia is a bustling city with plenty of things to do, many find themselves searching for a home in more suburban areas once it’s time to settle down and start a family. If you have or are planning to have kids, you might choose a county or township based on the school district.

If you're a parent, then you know that finding the right school district is crucial to your child's education. And if you're a homeowner, then you know that finding the best school district is important to the value of your home. So, which school districts should you be looking at? We've put together a list of the best school districts in and around Philadelphia, so you can rest assured that your family will be in good hands.

The School District of Philadelphia

If you live within city limits, your child will likely attend school in the The School District of Philadelphia (unless you go for a private institution). This district contains 217 schools and about 124,111 students in total, making it the largest in the area. While many are critical of Philadelphia’s school district due to lack of funding, it’s one of the most diverse districts in the area.

The main issue facing the School District of Philadelphia is poverty. Statistics show that about 70.5% of students are economically disadvantaged. Additionally, graduation rate for students is just below 75%, which falls slightly below the national average of 84.6%. It’s important to note that the graduation rate has increased throughout the past decade or so as public demand for better resources has grown.

While the school district certainly has it’s issues, there are options that allow students to thrive. According to data company
Niche, Julia R. Masterman Secondary School has been voted #1 for Standout High Schools in America. This school boasts a 95% graduation rate, which is well above the district average.

When searching for a school in Philadelphia, make sure you do your due diligence in researching statistics, culture, and resources.

Tredyffrin/Easttown School District

Located about 25 miles from the city, Tredyffrin/Easttown School District has been called the best public school system in Pennsylvania. This district consists of 8 schools and about 6,000 students in total. Many parents love TESD for its competitive nature that drives students to go above and beyond academically.

The average graduation rate falls at about 97%, which is far above the national average. Additionally, 99% of students who graduate went on to attend college or university. Given that this district is significantly smaller than Philadelphia, the teacher to student ratio allows for a more intimate teaching experience.
