Some people are list people and some are not, but please for the sake of your sanity make a list of all of the things that you need to remember while moving. Use this list to take inventory of all of your belongings and check off items on the list before they are packed away. Then to save yourself the headache label each box to save time unpacking and to make sure the movers did not forget anything.
Just like how when you fly you want to have one change of clothes in your carry on just in case you lose your luggage, you should do the same when moving. Pack a survival kit of your necessary items that you will need right when you move, so you don’t have to be rummaging through every box looking for your toothbrush.
If you are hiring a moving company to bring all of your belongings to your new home, you should put aside valuable or fragile items that you can take yourself. If you have lots of fragile items to move you should load up on bubble wrap. It is better to play it safe and wrap up all of your glass or ceramic items in bubble wrap. There’s no need to have fine china banging around in the back of a moving truck if you can avoid it.
Moving house plants can also be a hassle and need gentle care, so it may be best to take care of them yourself. Pet owners also need to take proper precautions moving their furry friends. It is always best to have a dog crate or carrier for dogs and cats to keep them safe during the move.
Make sure to do your research before hiring moving companies. Do this by reading online reviews, and talk to friends about their experiences with different companies. It is important to get an estimate from the company before they come out. I’m sure you have heard some horror stories of people having possessions stolen or damaged without reimbursement.
Don’t forget to cancel your utilities and change your mailing address. To change your mailing address, you just need to fill out a change of address form. You can do this in just a few minutes on the post office website. As for utilities, it is recommended you call two weeks prior to your move to make sure everything is shut off at the right time.
One final note to add is to use this time packing up to go through and get rid of things you do not use or need anymore. We all have those knick knacks and old clothes that sit in our closets that have not been touched in years. Your local Goodwill or Salvation Army will gladly take your old clothes and household items off your hands. This will cut down on the amount of things you will have to move and will give you a fresh start without the clutter you accumulated at your old home.
