How To Stay Healthy While Working From Home

March 27, 2020

Managing stress, focus, and posture.

Things are quickly evolving with the news being spread about coronavirus (COVID-19). Many companies asked employees to help by asking their teams to work from home. Here are some ways you can stay productive and healthy while working remotely.

Stick to a Routine

Sticking to a routine when you're stuck at home may help you mentally and physically. They provide a needed structure in your day and help you prepare for the week. Creating specific routines while working from home will help you get into the flow of things for work. Instead of your morning commute, take a couple of minutes out of your day to read your emails and have a cup of coffee. Doing some morning yoga and after-work yoga or taking your dog on a walk can create a morning routine and help greatly with focus and stress. Starting your day and end your day at specific times. It’s important to draw lines between social life and work.

Have a Workspace

Once you have your routine down, it’s also important to choose an area of your home to work in. Some considerations for the location, noise level, comfort level, and lighting can help with focus and stress. Aim for a quiet spot with little to no distractions – then edit your space. Whether it’s adding some plants to liven up your space or organizing your work materials, doing these little things with help create your space into a place that is designed solely for work. Don’t forget – it’s crucial to fix your posture throughout the day because sitting in the same position in a chair or couch all day can lead to body pains.

Set Clear Goals

Creating attainable goals, and a task list for each day of the week when you work from home can help you stay laser-focused on work and on yourself. Performing in a work-from-home environment is already stressful enough, so it’s important to be creative in this type of environment. Creating small goals such as getting a work project done at a specific time, giving yourself a 10-minute break each day to relax and get refreshed, making sure you drink enough water throughout the day – or organizing goals by prioritizing which tasks should be completed by the end of the day will give you more opportunity to think about your performance and set new tasks for each day.

Communicate

Working from home will require you to reach out to more people and stay in constant communication with your team and loved ones. Keeping up with communication throughout the day will help maintain relationships and a sense of normalcy. For example, if you typically talk to your co-workers in the morning to catch up, do the same as you would remotely by texting them. Just because everyone is practicing social distancing doesn’t mean you need to actually feel so distant.

Meal Prep

Instead of filling your fridge with easy and quick meals, try to replace and stock your fridge and pantry with nutritious foods like fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and protein. When you see pre-portioned or healthier foods first, your mind will be set on those instead of unhealthy snacks. Snacks like yogurt with berries, overnight oats, hummus with veggies, or hard-boiled eggs, and an apple will keep you fuller for longer.
