Tips for living with roommates

November 12, 2020
Living with roommates is either a great experience or a nightmare. Being prepared and communicative with your roommate is a great way to ensure that you’re all on the same page and recognize each other’s needs. Listed below are some of the ways that you can organize with them to create a pleasant living experience for you and your roommates.

Create a schedule that works for everyone

The main thing problem most roommates have is that they find themselves cleaning up after each other’s messes, by having a schedule, you’ll be able to plan around each other and allow your living spaces to be cleaned without having to point the finger. Kitchen spaces are generally the hardest to manage since everyone operates on different schedules but talk with your roommates and create set days when everyone has to do their part and the dishes. That way everyone has a small responsibility and makes them more inclined to clean up after themselves.

Communication is absolutely essential

This is crucial for anyone living with roommates. Communication is the number one important way to keep things peaceful and have the best experience possible. You and your roommates all have needs, some like things cleaner than others and maybe your roommates like going to bed at a certain time. Instead of hoping that they’ll figure these needs out on their own, communicate with them to determine what they are so everyone can respect each other’s needs and preferences. Doing so will save everyone a lot of unnecessary conflicts.

Always respect each other’s personal stuff

This one should seem like a no-brainer but it happens more often than you might think and it’s a sure-fire way to start a conflict with one of your roommates so the best thing to do is avoid touching their food or personal belongings. Always ask permission before using anything that belongs to them

Hang out with your roommate more

You may only think of your roommate as someone who you live with but hang out with them once in a while. It’s better to at least have a better relationship with your roommate which we’ll lead to a better living experience for everyone and allow you to become more comfortable with approaching them on things that might be irritating you or vice-versa. It lays the groundwork for having constructive communication with your roommates.

Lastly, just have fun with the experience

Most of the time, living with a roommate is because you want to save money on rent, but enjoy your experience when you’re living with them. It’s easy for life to get in the way but don’t let that affect your living situation. Your roommates are people who are in a similar situation too and while habits can be annoying if they are the opposite of your standards, learn to forgive and communicate. No ones wants to be a bad roommate so enjoy the experience for what it is and try not to be too hard on yourself and your roommates
